By combining the broad principles of drug discovery with the latest investigative techniques Exscientia have developed an innovative, high-impact approach to enable phenotypic drug design.
Modern phenotypic experiments can comprehensively monitor a compound’s effect on either a cell, tissue or organism. These approaches generate enormous amounts of data that are not amenable to traditional analytical approaches.
Exscientia’s phenotypic design platform uniquely combines big data analysis with design. It automatically extracts key performance markers from high-dimensional phenotypic readouts and uses these to generate and optimise new iterations of compounds.
By testing each newly designed compound and comparing to both its anticipated performance and the total set of experimental readouts for all other molecules from the project, Exscientia are able to rapidly evolve compounds that satisfy key performance criteria.
The same system can also be used to infer whether compounds synthesized might interact with any well-researched protein targets. Such inference is based on potential similarities to compounds previously assayed by traditional target based techniques.
Where ‘target-deconvolution’ is possible, identification can provide orthogonal information to further accelerate project delivery.
